Laboratory Experience
Hajim students work alongside our faculty and researchers using state of the art equipment in specialized laboratories. In these labs, students get hands-on experience using the same equipment professionals use in the field—preparing them for careers in a variety of industries, as well as giving them the experience they need to pursue their own research in a higher education setting.
Explore our Labs
See firsthand the types of equipment you’ll be using in these virtual lab tours. This is just a small sample of labs available to Hajim undergraduate students.
- Audio and Music Engineering - Audio Studio - Record, mix, master, and produce world-class recordings using the tools provided in this studio.
- Biomedical Engineering - Biomechanical Testing Lab - Facilities for testing of the strength and functional performance of biological tissues and other materials.
- Hajim School - Fabrication Shop - Students and researchers use this shop to fabricate parts, systems, and projects of their own design.
- Mechanical Engineering - Fluids Lab - See how the air interacts and moves around a model object using the Fluids Lab’s subsonic wind tunnel.
- Institute of Optics - Fourier Optics - Home to a modified Helium Neon laser which passes light through apertures, to create various patterns and spacing.
- Institute of Optics - Hopkins Center - Use optical metrology instruments to precisely measure optical surfaces, as well as assess other characteristics.
- Audio and Music Engineering - Immersive Audio Lab - Lab used for spatial audio research in binaural audio, Ambisonics, wave field synthesis, and object-based audio.
- Hajim School - Machine Shop - An experienced toolmaker provides services to make parts and systems for students and faculty.
- Mechanical Engineering - Materials and Solids Lab - In this lab students can pull, compress, twist, and bend materials to determine their mechanical properties.
- Mechanical Engineering - Metrology Lab - Make and measure mechanical parts using equipment like a Faro Arm, 150-watt laser cutter, and isolation table.
- Electrical & Computer Engineering - Robotics/AI Laboratory - Develop new algorithms and models that enable robots to perform task more efficiently, accurately, and safely.
- Computer Science - Rochester Human-Computer Interaction - Research in affective computing, AR/VR, embodied conversational agent, and future interactions.
- Audio and Music Engineering - Sound Design Teaching Lab - Create, edit, and mix music and sounds, or writing code for audio-based programs.
- Institute of Optics - Spectral Sources - Explore the application of digital spectroscopy to study the colors contained in different light sources.
- Biomedical Engineering - Undergraduate Educational Lab - Make measurements, build instrumentation, and observe physiological systems in action.
- Chemical Engineering - Unit Operations Lab - Fundamental chemical engineering concepts are applied by students to run industrially important operations.
