Frequently Asked Questions
Below is a list of questions and responses that are frequently asked by prospective NROTC applicants and their families.
Applying
When do I have to apply for the scholarship?
You’ll need to apply for the scholarship in mid-to-late January for fall semester college entry. Don't wait for acceptance letters from colleges; apply concurrently. You can find this year’s application deadline on our applying page.
Where do I get an application?
Applications can be completed online. See our applying page for details. You can visit your local Navy/Marine Corps recruiting office or contact the NROTC Unit for guidance.
When I submit my application, what sort of military commitment am I getting myself into? If I do not get the scholarship does that mean I have to enlist?
Your commitment doesn't begin when you apply. It commences when you accept the scholarship and swear the oath of office. However, up until the beginning of sophomore year, you can withdraw from the program without any "payback" obligation.
Scholarship
What does the NROTC Scholarship cover?
The scholarship is comprehensive, covering tuition, regular fees, a book allowance, and a monthly stipend. Uniforms and naval science textbooks are supplied at no extra cost, although some items may need to be returned.
The scholarship does not pay for:
While the scholarship covers most costs, it does not include room and board. However, many participating schools (ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ and Rochester Institute of Technology) offer full room and board benefits to ROTC scholarship students. You may need to coordinate this with your school's financial office. It also doesn't cover course re-takes or summer school.
What kind of grades do I have to earn while on this scholarship?
To maintain the scholarship, you must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and earn a grade of "C" or better in your naval science courses.
What happens if I earn less than a 2.5 GPA?
If your GPA falls below 2.5, you may be required to attend supervised study sessions and receive tutoring if needed. Repeatedly falling below this threshold can lead to scholarship suspension or disenrollment.
What is the scholarship awarding process once my application is submitted?
After submitting your application, it's reviewed and processed by local recruiters, followed by an officer interview. The entire package is forwarded to the NROTC program manager's office in Pensacola, FL, for board review. Decisions may not be received until March or April.
How does NROTC decide which unit/school they will assign my scholarship to?
You can select five institutions where you'd be willing to use your scholarship. Efforts are made to match your preferences. The assignment considers the number of applicants for a particular school and your acceptance to that institution.
What kind of medical insurance is provided as part of the NROTC scholarship?
NROTC midshipmen must have their own medical coverage. During summer cruises on military orders, the government covers additional medical expenses.
Campus Life
Where is the Rochester NROTC Unit located?
You can find the Rochester NROTC Unit on the ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ River Campus, specifically on the first floor of Morey Hall. You can consult the campus map for exact location details.
My first choice is one of the "cross-town" schools. Does this mean I have to come to the ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ for NROTC activities?
If your preferred college is a "cross-town" school, you will need to come to the ÌìÃÀÊÓƵ for NROTC activities.
Does this mean that midshipmen at the cross-town schools must have their own car?
Most midshipmen at cross-town schools arrange carpooling for transportation. In cases where a midshipman can't make it to the NROTC unit, assistance is provided in finding or providing transportation.
How difficult are the physical training requirements?
Physical training takes place twice a week for Navy midshipmen and three times a week for Marines. Workouts focus on all-around fitness and health, exceeding minimum requirements. Specific fitness tests are detailed, and those who barely pass are required to do extra supervised workouts.
How many hours each week does NROTC take?
The NROTC schedule includes activities from early mornings to Wednesday afternoons. Friday mornings often feature additional PT sessions, and mandatory study halls are held for students with substandard grades.
Someone told me I cannot play a varsity sport while in NROTC. Is this true?
Midshipmen can participate in varsity sports while in NROTC, with support for coordinating schedules with coaches and maintaining academic and physical fitness requirements.
I'm looking at RIT's engineering programs and a lot of them are five years, but the NROTC website says the scholarship is only for up to four years. How does this work?
Scholarships can be extended beyond four years for specific circumstances, such as co-op programs, on a case-by-case basis.
Policies
What is the policy regarding drug usage?
NROTC has a strict zero-tolerance policy for controlled substances. A positive drug test can lead to disenrollment and repayment of scholarship funds.
What is the policy regarding tobacco use?
Midshipmen can smoke or chew tobacco in areas where the host university permits it. NROTC discourages tobacco use and provides information on tobacco cessation resources.
What is the policy regarding alcohol use?
Underage drinking is prohibited. Those over 21 may consume alcohol responsibly. Social events may include alcohol for legal drinkers, provided non-alcoholic options and supervision are available.
Can you describe these "summer cruises" a little better for me?
A student on an NROTC scholarship has a training "cruise" each summer. These excursions are normally one month long. The goal of the summer cruises is to give the midshipmen first-hand experience in the various branches within the Navy and Marine Corps, thereby helping them decide which career field they will request to be placed in upon graduation (surface, submarine, aviation, special warfare, etc.).
Deployment
What are the chances that I will be ordered to deploy and not be able to complete college?
NROTC midshipmen are not deployed while in school. Deployment occurs later in naval service after graduation, commissioning and naval training.
Salary and Service
Does my time as a midshipman count as military service?
Your military service counter starts ticking after commissioning, not during your midshipman years.
